V1 – “Brothers”
Also watch on: YouTube | Vimeo
UPDATE: The YouTube link has been updated.
So guess what?
I was inspired with the “launch” of Jawaad Ahmad Khan that I decided to finally do something.
In all honesty, I’ve been lazy with my video editing, taping, and all my ‘talents’ in general. Why am I wasting something Allah has given me interest in? So, I took the video camera, and chronicled the journey of two brothers with empty pockets and a dream of a fun night. (My brother and I).
InshaAllah I hope to make this a project that is beneficial.
The main reasons I’m doing this are:
- To produce something which others will benefit from(and I can get some reward bi’idhnillah).
- To begin taping & editing on a regular basis (and develop my skill).
- To have a means of making consistent content for my blog.
I already can see the problems with the above video, and I hope to improve on them InshaAllah. For my personal help, let me try to address them here.
- Moving around too much and using a hacky sack to compensate for nervousness.
- SOLUTION: Film closer so I have to stay still, and nothing in my hands during production
- Uhh, umm, you know, like…
- SOLUTION: Have a rough script of my dialogue (if there is one).
- No real content, just a regular “so, this was my day…” (NO ONE CARES)
- SOLUTION: Have a point to each video that I want to get across. (In the field of film, Islam, or in life)
I feel very productive, Alhamdulillah.
Now, what I need from you.
From what you’ve read on this blog (and if you haven’t, then check the archive,
), what can I offer you? What do you think I should talk about? What ideas do you have? Do you have an idea for a short film for me to produce? Is there an issue that’s just so important you want it revealed? Do you want to be in a video?
Comment with all and any of your ideas. (I’ll try to use this first post as a reference, an idea bank, so I can keep going).
Wasalaamu ‘Alaikum

Nice Masha’Allah.
Btw, what happened in the middle. Someone was explaining the three rules of window shopping and it went BLANK for a whiiiile
F-U-N. That’s why I got from this video.
That’s weird. I think something’s wrong with blip, try it on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtErekuYzIc
And man, you’re fast.
Start thinking of some ideas! If some episodes are like speeches (5 tips for being and american Muslim teenager, etc.), they can be converted into articles for MYM!
Think, man, think! (I’m going to bed)
Wasalaamu ‘Alaikum
Remember, any and every type of medium is allowed on MYM, especially videos. So even if you just post a vid, that’s straight
Anyways, Ideas. Hrmmm…
1. Start with interviewing great Floridan Muslims. Begin with your brother and father, and then branch out to the Imam, all your FAYM peeps, Islamic school teachers, and others. Collect pearls of wisdom and prominently display it.
2. Reflections of what you’ve read or experienced for that day, kind of like this one. I liked how you actually had footage from your day. However, just as a sidenote, it might be better to stand in one place the whole time, perhaps not to rub the hands together, and to continuously look up (constructive criticism I hope). But I enjoyed the video nevertheless.
3. Engage in debates with other fair-minded individuals. It doesn’t have to be something that deals with Fiqh or anything, just a topic is arguable and there are two valid answers. For example, should Muslims ever go on breaks and vacations? (1 side – everybody needs breaks, 1 side – Life is too short, etc.). It might be even cooler if you could get like five guys on each side and then debate, or perhaps three teams
MashaAllah some great ideas!
InshaAllah I think I’ll make this into variety show of sorts. Sometimes I can do things like the interviews (great idea btw), and maybe switch to shorts (films), and maybe even a completely CGI video?
Though, I’m trying to think of a proper title for it, and develop it into a project.
Once again, thanks for the great ideas, wasalaam!
Kool! I hope this turns out to be a great project
Some tips (not sure if they’ll help or not since I have no clue when it comes to video stufff)
1- A story line/plot/something that’ll capture the attention of the watcher
2- I think having a theme or lesson in some episodes would be good – basically to make videos that people will get something out of
One other thing, just remember ‘With Ikhlas comes great sucess’ – self quoted lol
Good luck!
Thanks for the support! (and tips). Nice quote by the way,
Good stuff Jawaad, especially in getting started with this.
I liked that you still posted this video, even though you noticed many problems with it.
Future:
- entertainment with following someone’s adventure and funny stuff always works, but easier said than done
- Recommendation: (if you want it to go big) ONLY the best stuff gets in. Even if you worked realy hard for the shots, if it’s not improving the story then it’s gotta go. Mainly because it’s so easy for people to click away, so keep their attention.
All in all, I wish you the best with this project and your growth.
-Nahyan
ps. I’m actually going to do more videos inshaAllah, so I’ll be lookin out for your stuff and asking for feedback.
Jazakallahu Khair for the support. I honestly love video production, but haven’t been able to dabble in it too far. I hope with this project I’ll be able to find my strengths (and enhance them) as well as my weaknesses (and work on them). So really, this is all just a learning experience.
Also, I hope you too start producing some of those productivity videos! I really enjoy them and like the techniques you suggest (specifically, I’m starting to use the one where you add pressure with deadlines)
Wasalaamu ‘Alaykum
